What Software Development Taught Me About Developing Myself

If you’ve ever tried to reinvent your life overnight, you know how fast burnout hits. But in the tech world, we do things differently. We break big change into small, testable pieces and we build better software that way. Now I’m using that same approach to build something even more important. Myself.

First, a quick breakdown:

This is how a dev team builds software.

  • Plan – There’s a problem to solve, so we brainstorm solutions.

  • Design – We map out the blueprint for how we’ll solve it.

  • Develop – We build the thing. We write the code.

  • Test – We figure out what’s working (and what’s not).

  • Deploy – Once it’s solid, we ship it.

  • Maintain – We don’t stop there. We keep it running smoothly.

It’s called the Software Development Lifecycle — and it’s never-ending.
Because software evolves.
And so do we.

Sound familiar?

We do the same thing in real life — just without all the structure.
We try new routines.
Set goals.
Abandon them.
Pick new ones.
Repeat.

It’s messy. Exhausting. Beautiful.

So what if we developed ourselves like we develop software?

Think about it:

You plan to change something.
You design a routine.
You try new habits.
You test foods, workouts, sleep hacks.
You deploy what works.
You maintain what matters.

You’re not stuck.
You’re just between versions.

But... it’s a lot.

And in tech, when something feels overwhelming, we simplify.
We work in Two-Week Sprints. Short cycles where we commit to just a few meaningful tasks.

That’s the idea behind Version Her.

Every 2 Weeks = A New "Version You" Release

You don’t need to change everything.
You just need to ship the next version of you.

Here’s what that might look like:

Release Notes:
  • Bug Fixes – something I let go of or stopped doing

  • Features Shipped – a new habit, boundary, or ritual I added

  • Performance Gains – something that supported my mind or body

  • Learnings – what I tested, what worked, what didn’t

Start small:
  • Drink water before your coffee

  • Walk 10 minutes after one meal

  • Use Night Shift when scrolling before bed

No pressure.
No perfection.
Just progress.
